The Transition Timeline: Switching Your Dog to Raw in 7 Days

The Transition Timeline: Switching Your Dog to Raw in 7 Days

So, you’ve decided to make the leap. You’ve done the research, you’ve seen the photos of those gleaming "raw-fed" coats, and you’ve likely spent a fair amount of time staring at the freezer section of our Markham shop. But now that the box of Canada Raw has arrived at your door in the GTA, a new question looms: How do I actually start?

The transition from processed kibble to a biologically appropriate raw food (BARF) diet is one of the best gifts you can give your dog. However, their digestive system—which has likely been processing dry, high-carb nuggets for years—needs a moment to recalibrate.

At Canada Raw, we recommend a 7-day transition. This window is the "sweet spot" that allows your dog’s stomach acidity to adjust and their gut microbiome to shift without causing unnecessary digestive upset. Here is your day-by-day roadmap to success.

Before You Start: The "Clean Slate" Rule

Before Day 1 begins, we recommend a 12 to 24-hour fast (for adult dogs only; puppies should not be fasted). Skipping a meal helps clear the digestive tract of lingering kibble, which digests at a much slower rate than raw meat. Think of it as a metabolic "reset button."

Days 1 & 2: Testing the Waters

The Ratio: 25% Canada Raw / 75% Old Food

On the first two days, you aren't trying to overhaul the diet; you’re introducing a new guest to the party.

What to watch for: Keep an eye on the stool. It’s normal to see a slight change in consistency, but if things stay relatively firm, you’re on the right track.

Pro-Tip: If your dog is a "gulper," ensure the raw portion is slightly thawed but still firm, or use a slow-feeder bowl. Since raw food is more nutrient-dense, the volume in the bowl will look smaller than the kibble piles you’re used to—don't let those "puppy eyes" trick you into overfeeding!

Days 3 & 4: The Halfway Mark

The Ratio: 50% Canada Raw / 50% Old Food

By Day 3, your dog’s pancreas is beginning to produce the necessary enzymes to break down raw proteins and fats more efficiently. This is often the stage where owners notice the "Kibble Conflict"—many dogs will start picking out the fresh Canada Raw nuggets and leaving the dry kibble behind.

The Science Side: Kibble is high in starch, which requires a more alkaline environment. Raw meat requires a highly acidic stomach (a pH of around 1 or 2). By mixing them 50/50, you are gradually "tuning" that internal chemistry.

Days 5 & 6: The Home Stretch

The Ratio: 75% Canada Raw / 25% Old Food

You are almost there! At this stage, the kibble is merely a garnish. Most dogs by Day 5 are showing increased excitement at mealtime. You might notice they are drinking significantly less water. Don't panic! This is normal. Kibble is dehydrated (usually only 10% moisture), whereas our raw blends are naturally hydrated (approx. 70% moisture). They are getting their water through their food now.

Day 7: The Full Raw Experience

The Ratio: 100% Canada Raw

Congratulations! Your dog is officially a raw-fed pup. From here on out, their meals are free of fillers, synthetic preservatives, and mystery "meat meals."

What to Expect During the Transition

Transitioning isn’t always a perfectly straight line. Here are three things many Toronto pet parents experience during that first week:

1. The "Detox" Period

Occasionally, a dog may experience a "detox" as their body purges toxins stored from processed foods. This might look like a slightly runny stool or a bit of extra mucus. As long as your dog is energetic and acting like themselves, stay the course. If the diarrhea persists for more than 48 hours, dial back the ratio to the previous day’s levels.

2. The Stool Transformation

This is the part raw feeders love to talk about at the dog park. Raw-fed poop is:

Smaller and firmer.

Less smelly (since the body is actually absorbing the nutrients rather than passing fillers).

Easier to pick up (and it eventually turns to a white powder and decomposes if left alone).

3. Increased Energy and "The Zoomies"

Don't be surprised if your senior dog starts acting like a puppy again by Day 7. Real protein provides real, sustained energy without the "carb crashes" associated with grain-heavy kibble.

Safety & Handling Tips for the GTA Home

Since you’re handling fresh, human-grade meat, treat it exactly as you would your own Sunday night roast:

Thaw Safely: Always thaw your Canada Raw containers in the fridge, not on the counter.

Clean Surfaces: Wash bowls and countertops with hot, soapy water after every feeding.

The "Two-Day" Rule: Once thawed, raw food stays fresh in the fridge for about 2–3 days.
